Spanish Bilingual Learning

We envision a school where language and communication is multifaceted. A community where no one language is the official language of communication, only one of many. Because language and culture are inextricably linked, if we are to have a multiethnic school that respects and honors the traditions of all students, we must also have a multilingual school that respects and honors the languages of all students.

The Angela Day School offers a dual or two-way Spanish bilingual language immersion program. Students enrolled in the Dual Language (DL) program learn their core course work in Spanish and English in a class with students whose first language is Spanish and students whose first language is English. Non-DL students learn language through specialty subjects, called the specials and in dedicated language classes.

Our Spanish Bilingual Language Immersion program is structured to facilitate community building by creating community between different language communities and allowing families from English speaking households to view non-English languages as equally important. Language immersion programs allow for the development of cross-cultural relationships between students and families and the strengthening of community bonds. The language programs also help to encourage camaraderie amongst staff and students as they work together to implement an inclusive language program in the school.

Embracing the first language of all our students is part of the basic framework of The Angela Day School. This is to cement the principle that all languages are equal and that language and culture are inextricably linked. That if we deny the opportunity of our students to speak their first language, we undermine the whole child development of every student.
